Other Protestant villages, especially in the Cévennes,13 also sheltered children. In this way, hundreds of children could be concealed all across France in families that had been recommended by prominent people who were willing to protect the OSE activities in a given area.

The foster families were often contacted through the intermediary of an important religious person in the region or of a woman teacher, who was generally the only one in the village to know that the child was not only a “refugee” but also a Jew. Among the foster families were many large families for whom the care of an additional child was not too burdensome. They often lived in the countryside and also benefited from being able to meet their own needs for food. For the most part, they were women whose husbands were prisoners in Germany and who found moral support in the presence of a child. In some cases, the family received modest financial aid, but sometimes it was simply a matter of performing a generous deed.
